„Versionen vom Ende“ Ein Seminar in 3 Teilen von und mit Robert Dwornicki

In the organizer's words:

"The end is near!" For a long time, only Jehovah's Witnesses spoke like this. But something has long since changed. Talk of the "end of the world" has become commonplace again. In fact, various scenarios are undisputed: we now know that the global climate can no longer be saved if temperatures rise. The war in Ukraine has made nuclear war conceivable again. And isn't a "global killer", i.e. a large asteroid, already approaching the earth in 2035?

Individually, however, we live as if we were immortal, even dreaming of the "immortality gene". Until we discover this, we optimize our health and hope to postpone our death as long as possible. Until we often want to go voluntarily in our lonely, weary old age, because we realize that life is more than biological functionality and complain bitterly that this is not so easy in our country by law.

But one thing is also clear: in all these contexts, religion has long since lost its "eschatological thrust" (P. Sloterdijk) due to the prospect of a heavenly paradise after death. At most, we still use religious formulas at funerals, where they are supposed to comfort us, but often do not do so because they are no longer believed.

Instead, we prefer to rely on science. But science is only completely sure of one thing: whether individual, global or cosmological - the end is certain and ultimately only a matter of time.

What does "hope" mean under these conditions? And what helps us to trust this hope?
