"It couldn't be anyone else. It had to be the four of us," says Anji Greenwood, the lead singer of VOIID. With a newly confessional twist and a sound that straddles the fault line between alternative rock and post-punk, the band's debut album,Watering Dead Flowers, couldn't be anything else.

Since 2015, VOIID has carved out a space in Australia's DIY underground that belongs to them and their hungry fanbase alone. Based in Brisbane/Meanjin, VOIID's biting EPs - 'Pussy Orientated' (2017), 'Drool' (2019) and 'Socioanomaly' (2020) - followed in the footsteps of feminist punk bands before them, exposing the physical and emotional brutality that marginalizes young women. Anji, Mina Cannon (drums), Antonia Hickey (bass/vocals) and Kate McGuire (guitar/vocals) have created a sanctuary where listeners can feel empowered in their anger, ferocity and friendships.

Recorded in 2021 by Matt Cochran (Talk Heavy, WALKEN) with support from Caleb Anderson (Mouse), "Watering Dead Flowers" marks the first time VOIID have deviated from their outward focus and turned their gaze inward. Influenced by artists like that dog., Juliana Hatfield and Beabadoobee, the diary entries in the songs are both determined and insecure, calculating and vulnerable in the way they explore the formative relationships and emotions of young adulthood. The personal remains political, but the album's strongest anchor is the band's unity and the connection between its members, a sacred constant in the face of ever-changing romantic and familial dynamics.
