Vorlesung im Kolleg: Musikinstrumente als Zeugen verklungener Kulturen

In the organizer's words:

Precious and unique musical instruments from the past five centuries have come down to us in museums and collections around the world. But only the more recent ones have survived exactly as they were once made. The vast majority, on the other hand, show clear traces of their long careers. They were rebuilt or repaired, sold or stolen, passionately used or carelessly abandoned, sometimes even in the hands of prominent instrumentalists. Reading these objects as carriers of historical knowledge is the task of academic instrumentology. And the aim of DIGITAL ORGANOLOGY is to store the knowledge gained in this way in a controlled manner and bring it together in a comparable way for further research. In its virtual research environment, organological knowledge is brought together and continuously updated not only from its own projects, but also from globally distributed databases. In this way, lost states of the past can be recovered in virtual spaces, such as lost collections or earlier manifestations of their individual instruments. Humans and machines research together, but from different perspectives and with distributed tasks.

In his lecture on historical musical instruments, Prof. Dr. Josef Focht will present the perspectives and work of academic instrumentology and the DIGITAL ORGANOLOGY research unit at Leipzig University's Musical Instrument Museum.

The lectures will take place as face-to-face and livestream events. With this booking option, you can decide individually for each date whether you want to follow the lectures with like-minded people in presence in the Audimax or the event conveniently from anywhere in the world via livestream.
