On April 15, 2019, the fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris shook the world. The disaster triggered an unprecedented wave of sympathy worldwide. That very night, numerous countries, institutions and private individuals pledged their support for the reconstruction. The former master builder of Cologne Cathedral, Prof. Dr. Barbara Schock-Werner, was appointed coordinator of the German reconstruction aid at the suggestion of the then Minister of State for Culture, Monika Grütters. She accompanied the reconstruction in an advisory capacity and contributed her experience in dealing with major historical buildings.

Using numerous pictures, the expert explains the circumstances of the devastating fire, its far-reaching consequences and the German contribution to the restoration of the cathedral.
