The influence of riparian forests on the Rhine level
At the end of 2023, Düsseldorf once again experienced the Rhine bursting its banks and flooding many areas, including the Urdenbacher Kämpe. There have always been floods when large rivers such as the Rhine carry too much water. In the meantime, both high and low water have reached a new level. There used to be riparian forests along the banks of large rivers that regulated water levels and were able to defuse floods. The lecture is dedicated to the little-known riparian forests, the most diverse and species-rich native habitats. Apart from a few remnants, riparian forests have disappeared due to the straightening and development of rivers. Now that their great importance is known, they are making a comeback. The German-Dutch Interregio project "The Rhine connects" is also dedicated to the expansion of riparian forests.
