Houston's Waterparks are three friends who make music, hang out, and constantly rewrite the script of their careers. At the same time, the collective, which always explodes all genres, also feels like a larger movement. The trio - vocalist and guitarist Awsten Knight, guitarist Geoff Wigington, and drummer Otto Wood - has, in a very humble way, given rock back its vitality. Magically, it has magnetically attracted a growing band of loyal fans, who usually sell out its concerts quickly and stream the songs like crazy. That's taken them way up the rock and alternative billboard charts, headlining festival stages and being special guests on a sold-out arena tour by My Chemical Romance. Waterparks think they could be the biggest band of tomorrow if they weren't so incredible today. They reached unprecedented heights in 2021 with their studio album "Greatest Hits", which of course only contained new best songs. This wild mixture, which has characterized Waterparks since its inception about ten years ago, is taken to the extreme. The foundation is always a poppy punk appeal, but over that the Texans sprinkle a variety of sounds. The vocals slip into rap parts, only to be alienated by autotune the next moment. Electronic excursions, jazzy harmonies, bubblegum pop and classic indie rock guitars add to the sound, and the guys are just as unafraid of thumping synths as they are of disco claps or hip-hop beats from the drums. The NME perhaps summed it up best, "Instead of celebrating the past, the record opens the door to what's next." Their fifth album, Intellectual Property, comes out April 14 on Fueled By Ramen and heralds a new era. Or as vocalist Awsten says, "It's bouncy shit. Even if it's aggressive, it's enthusiastic.
