"Joyeux noël" is what the Duisburg Philharmonic wishes on this wintry occasion - Merry Christmas in French! Even if the composers on the program were not necessarily thinking of tinsel and roast goose when they put their chamber music down on paper, works such as Claude Debussy's dreamy solo fantasy "Syrinx" or Jacques Ibert's playful "Interludes" fit the Christmas season: the perfect musical setting for contemplation and anticipation, filled with the proverbial French esprit that has already inspired newcomers such as Ladislas de Rohozinski or Arnold Bax, who lives on the other side of the English Channel.
