On World Refugee Day, a broad alliance of Munich organizations invites you to the Refugio Art Workshop (Dachauer Str. 90) on June 20, 2026, from 4 PM to 10 PM.

Enjoy live music, workshops, creative activities, children’s theater, graffiti, information booths, and opportunities to connect with people from all backgrounds. 🌍🎶🎨

With a major cultural festival centered on encounter, diversity, and social cohesion, Munich is sending a clear message of openness and solidarity on World Refugee Day. Under the title “Open hearts – open minds!”, a broad coalition of Munich-based organizations invites you to the Refugio Art Workshop at Dachauer Straße 90 on Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 4 PM to 10 PM.
The festival aims to bring together people with and without refugee or migration experiences and to highlight the cultural diversity of Munich’s urban society. The focus is on exchange, encounter, and participation—combined with the message that an open city thrives on togetherness.
“Open hearts – open minds!” sees itself not only as a cultural event but also as a social statement. In light of increasing polarization and an often tense debate on refugee and migration issues, the organizers aim to create a space where people can engage in conversation, break down prejudices, and develop shared perspectives.
The audience can look forward to a diverse and family-friendly program: live music by Farhang e.V., Guy-El and Kimuntu Project, Kaleidoskope, Jisr, and die_ley, complemented by workshops, information booths, and numerous hands-on activities for all age groups.
Face painting, a graffiti workshop, children’s theater, painting activities, and other creative formats offer the youngest visitors space to experiment, create, and share experiences together.
This year features a wonderful collaboration with the Swiss Photo Club: Until May 13, anyone interested can submit photos to be included in the exhibition at Kunstlabor 2. For each submission, €1 will be donated to the Refugio Art Workshop. Under the World Refugee Day motto “Open Hearts, Open Minds,” an audience award will also be presented. Visitors are invited to cast their votes.
With its mix of culture, information, social interaction, and a family-oriented program, the festival is likely to attract attention far beyond World Refugee Day. The organizers are hoping for many visitors—and for a clear signal that Munich remains an open and supportive city.

The event is free of charge.

Background:
World Refugee Day was established by the United Nations in 2001 and has been observed annually on June 20 ever since. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) publishes its annual report on this occasion.
As of mid-2025, over 117 million people worldwide were displaced, including 67.8 million internally displaced persons and 36.4 million refugees who had fled war, violence, and persecution. Approximately 8.4 million people were considered asylum seekers.
