Lecture by Ronny Vollandt, Institute for the Near and Middle East at LMU as part of the exhibition "Yalla. Arab-Jewish Contacts"
What happens to cultural assets when their communities disappear? This lecture sheds light on the turbulent history of Jewish culture in the Middle East and North Africa - from synagogues and museums to valuable libraries and archives. It shows how migration, politics and international regulations shape the handling of this heritage and what challenges exist in terms of protection, restitution and research. An exciting journey through the past and present of a largely unknown - and disappearing - Jewish culture.
Prof. Dr. Ronny Vollandt is Professor of Jewish Studies at the Institute for the Near and Middle East at LMU.
