When verses rain - installation in the Central Mosque in Cologne (PASSAGEN 2026)

In January, the Central Mosque in Cologne will become a silent experiential space: the installation "When verses rain" invites you to a haptic interior experience in which voice, light and fabric interact like falling drops. Qur'anic verses about rain appear as text projections in the room - a poetic "trickling down" that not only becomes visible, but also makes it possible to experience what revelation can mean within as a gift, comfort and love.

Those who linger and read experience the installation as a dialogical event: At selected points, the space reacts to presence - verses are not only viewed, but can also become audible at the right moment. In this way, writing is transformed into light, light into water and water into a quiet breath that carries the room.

In terms of content, the installation takes up two Qur'anic motifs that touch Cologne in a special way as an open, religiously diverse urban society: Light as orientation and a symbol of divine guidance (Sura An-Nur 24:35) and rain/water as a blessed gift that revitalizes and allows growth (Sura Qaf 50:9-10). Both motifs open up an approach that does not explain religious language, but offers it as an experience: contemplative, sensual and at the same time accessible.
