Cinema Quadrat and Lesbisch-Schwule Geschichtswerkstatt Rhein-Neckar show a funny comedy about the poet Emily Dickinson, whose lesbian love (and life) story was rewritten posthumously by her publisher:
WILD NIGHTS WITH EMILY

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) is considered one of the most important poets in world literature - and a mysterious woman who lived a secluded life and was said to be too sensitive for the world. During her lifetime, few knew that Emily had a passionate love affair with her childhood friend and later sister-in-law Susan Gilbert. Even after Emily's death, the relationship was kept a closely guarded secret - especially by Emily's ambitious publisher Mabel, who even manipulated the posthumously published poems and re-addressed Emily's fiery love letters for Susan to men. Based on Dickinson's reconstructed letters, Madeleine Olnek's hilarious comedy is about a mercurial poet who was leaps and bounds ahead of her time and, above all, the male-dominated literary world. The film also exemplifies how a lesbian life story was deliberately rewritten to fit a hetero-normative narrative. For IndieWire, "the best lesbian comedy in years."
