WOHNUNGSBESICHTIGUNG: Eine interaktive Live-Begehung mit 3D-Sound und Performer*innen

The housing market is tighter than ever - there are housing applications on almost every lamppost, and high rewards are sometimes promised for a placement. Housing is the new social issue. Philine Velhagen/DRAMA KÖLN poses it on location: for one week, a detached house in Cologne-Lindenthal becomes an immersive and interactive live audio drama stage.

WOHNUNGSBESICHTIGUNG is a production by Drama Köln, directed by radio play and theater director Philine Velhagen. After its premiere, it was shown at FAVORITEN 2020, the theater, dance and performance festival of the independent scene in North Rhine-Westphalia. An updated version will now be shown on a few dates.

A disembodied female voice guides us through the rooms of the object of desire, a house in a central location in Cologne. Everyone wants it, but who will get it in the end? The ones with the most money? The most beautiful? The tidiest? Or the wild artists that nobody would have thought of? The interested parties speculate about the absence of the estate agent. Does she even exist? Is she concealing her location, or even her real intentions? And do the people looking for an apartment really all hear the same thing, or why does one part of the group take off their shoes and lie comfortably in the corner where a bed could well be, while the others are still lying about their self-disclosure?

WOHNUNGSBESICHTIGUNG uses the means of theater, radio play and group dynamics to transform the apartment from an object of social debate into a place of discussion itself. The supposedly private space becomes a public one in which current developments, trench warfare and utopian concepts of (co)living can be sensually reflected upon. Those supposedly looking for a home watch each other live and compete for it and recognize each other. How does the current housing market influence the social climate? What alternatives should there be? And what can we learn from all those who have lived on this planet and in our homes before us? An invitation to listen, take a stand and occupy.
