Wolfgang M. Heckl on "The culture of repair"
Lecture as part of the special exhibition "Jetzt geht's rund - Kreisläufe statt Abfälle" at the Museum Mensch und Natur
Thursday, 21.05.2026
Start: 18:30 hrs
Wolfgang M. Heckl, former Director General of the Deutsches Museum in Munich,
brings us closer to the culture of repair in an entertaining way in his lecture. He talks about the aspects of sustainability, but also how important it is to learn analytical thinking and to attract young talent in the STEM subjects - and shows us the way to greater autonomy from industry.
As soon as a smartphone screen shatters, we quickly buy a new one and dispose of the old one. But we can escape the throwaway society - by learning to repair broken things ourselves again. Not only does this save the planet's resources, it's also a lot of fun! There are repair cafés all over Europe where people work together on broken record players and toasters or create new individual favorites from second-hand clothes.
Prof. Dr. Wolfgang M. Heckl is a physicist and was General Director of the Deutsches Museum in Munich from 2004 to May 2025 . He has already received several prizes for his entertaining presentation of difficult scientific concepts, including the René Descartes Prize from the European Commission: https://wolfgang-heckl.de/
