WOMEN IN JAZZ - JULIA HÜLSMANN QUARTETT

If the continuity factor alone were a mark of quality for contemporary jazz, it would inevitably have to be associated with Berlin pianist Julia Hülsmann and her tried and tested partners of decades (!), bassist Marc Muellbauer, drummer Heinrich Köbberling and saxophonist Uli Kempendorff. The quartet impresses in concert with a consistently noticeable calmness, subtly resonant melodies and the sound of the piano, which in some compositions seems to be out of this world. This refers to the concerts for the 2022 ECM album THE NEXT DOOR, which can be located somewhere between the modal conventions of the 60s and post-bop and which the Guardian describes as "a tour de force, for its unobtrusive reinvention of the familiar and its cool virtuosity" and as "smart, thoughtful, curious contemporary jazz music".
The festival organizers are certainly delighted that Julia Hülsmann, who has provided the festival with support and creative perspectives through various concert projects and workshops, has accepted the invitation to the anniversary festival.
