an event by steptext dance project

In this workshop, Samir Calixto will teach you the most important creative elements of his production RAIZ. He will give insights into his choreographic universe, in which inner impulses and strong physicality meet. The focus is on an organic sense of movement that arises from his sensitive approach to articulation and body awareness.

You are invited to explore unconventional physical textures. From there, we will explore how external elements, such as a specific musical backdrop or mental imagery, have a strong influence on the creation of unique and personalized movement sequences.

Information about Samir Calixto:

Samir Calixto was born in 1978 in São Paulo, Brazil. Before he came to dance, he studied acting at the EAD (Drama Art School) of São Paulo University and classical singing at the São Paulo Conservatory. In 2004, Calixto moved his work to Europe and initially established himself as a freelance dancer. Since 2012, he has primarily developed his own pieces and has made a name for himself as a freelance choreographer in the Netherlands and Italy. Since then, his pieces have toured successfully on all stages in Holland, followed by international commissions and guest performances.

His most important works include "Winterreise Tetralogy" (2021), "4 Seasons" (2014) - nominated for the "ZWAAN", the most important Dutch dance award for choreography of the year, and winner of the first BNG EXCELLENT TALENT AWARD, "M" (2016), co-produced by Korzo Theater and Nederlands Dans Theater, Summa (2018) with the Cello Octet Amsterdam to specially transcribed works by Arvo Pärt, "Die Schöne Müllerin" (2018) for the dance company Theater Osnabrück (DE), IN FUGA I (2019), a commissioned work for the Bremen/Hanover company Of Curious Nature, SEEKER※SOLO (2020), DIDO ÆNEAS US & ALL to Purcell's famous opera, LA NOCHE ETERNA with the renowned Black Pencil Ensemble. His most recent works include FULGENCE (2025), his second commission for Of Curious Nature.
