Funk, Surf & Psychedelic
The beautiful, old and somewhat sedate city of Maastricht, where the band YĪN YĪN is based, is not exactly conducive to the development of a lively music scene: a place where outsiders quickly recognize each other. YĪN YĪN are all "night people", which means that their friendship initially came about through organizing and hosting DIY parties together. Before the band was formed, none of them had pursued conventional careers or done the "very Dutch thing" of graduating from university.
Things got moving when founders Yves Lennertz and Kees Berkers decided to produce a tape with references to South and Southeast Asian music. Once the idea was set, they wasted no time and brought "a lot" of instruments to a rented rehearsal room in a small village near Maastricht. There, the pair set up a couple of microphones and recorded a number of songs within three days.
"We asked our musical friends to help us, and from that evening on we were a full band: with Remy Scheren on bass, Robbert Verwijlen on keys and occasionally Jerome Cardynaals on drums."
In early 2022, YĪN YĪN underwent a major line-up change when co-founder Lennertz left the band and was replaced by guitarist Erik Bandt. Since then, the band has been conquering Europe's stages with renewed energy!
