A particularly moving historical path is brought to life with songs and made to resound: the time lane between the former Buchenwald concentration camp and Ettersburg Castle.
The atrocities committed by the National Socialists in the Buchenwald concentration camp between 1937 and 1945 are among the darkest chapters in German history. To commemorate the countless victims and maintain the culture of remembrance, the Liedstadt Festival invites visitors to take a hike from the Buchenwald Memorial to Ettersburg Castle, around three kilometers away.
The "Zeitschneise" connects the former Buchenwald concentration camp with Ettersburg Castle, a former summer residence of the Weimar court. From the 16th century, the Weimar nobility used the Ettersberg as a hunting ground and laid out so-called "hunting lanes" where game was rounded up for the hunting party. For the construction of the Buchenwald labor and extermination camp, the National Socialists used the existing paths as a guide and used them themselves as a link between the concentration camp and the surrounding villages. In the 1990s, the path between the Buchenwald concentration camp and Ettersburg Castle was restored and laid out as a memorial trail called "Zeitschneise".
The Liedstadt memorial walk begins at the burnt Goethe oak on the grounds of the Buchenwald Memorial with a "song without words" performed by Weimar guitarist Anne Haasch. Today, the roots of the Goethe oak stand for the self-assertion of the inmates and their memory of a better world outside the camp. The trail then leads along the "Zeitschneise" to Ettersburg Castle. The walk pauses at various points, the poet Daniel Arkadij Gerzenberg reads some of his texts and Julian Prégardien, accompanied by Anne Haasch, sings songs from over 200 years of Weimar history. Songs composed in Buchenwald concentration camp will also be performed. The memorial walk combines musical education, historical learning and social responsibility and makes an important contribution to the regional culture of remembrance.
With the Liedstadt artists Julian Prégardien (tenor), Anne Haasch (guitar) and Daniel Arkadij Gerzenberg (poetry).
