Zimmermann & Mussorgskij

In the organizer's words:

Ravel's famous orchestration of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" - flanked by other sonic wonders from the pre-World War II era: the large string orchestra seems to penetrate the interior of a cathedral with its abundance of color and spatial effect when Vaughan Williams' Tallis Fantasy climbs its mighty ascents. Ottorino Respighi translated ancient thematic material into the tonal language of the early 20th century with his "Gregorian Concerto": an ancient Easter sequence from before the turn of the first millennium, which he clothed in a suggestive interplay of shimmering orchestral colors - with the magnificent Frank Peter Zimmermann as violin soloist.
