Zum Holocaust-Gedenktag: "The Zone of Interest"

To mark Holocaust Memorial Day, Cinema Quadrat and MARCHIVUM are collaborating to screen the Oscar-winning film about Auschwitz commander Höss, who spent his youth in Mannheim:

A beautiful little house with a beautiful garden: Rudolf Höß lives here with his wife Hedwig and their five children. An idyll - except that the sky is always darkened by soot from the chimneys, and behind the garden wall you can hear a roaring and roaring, barking, roaring, screaming and shooting. For Rudolf Höss - who spent his youth in Mannheim - is the commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp. Crematoria are planned in the living room, the garden is fertilized with ashes of the murdered. This is the basis of the Höß family's happiness - which is only disturbed when Rudolf is to be transferred.
In this British production in German, Jonathan Glazer brings the horror of Auschwitz to the screen without showing it. Namely in the contrast between the everyday life of the commandant, which we see, and the inhuman noises we hear. The film has won many awards, including the Grand Jury Prize in Cannes and Oscars for Best International Film and Best Sound.
