For World Aids Day:
Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt
USA 1989 D: Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman. Documentary. 79 min. EnglOmdtU. FSK: 0
In their first joint film project, the highly acclaimed documentary duo Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (including THE CELLULOID CLOSET, 1995) explore the beginning of the Aids Memorial Quilt. In this collaborative artistic project of a patchwork quilt, which continues to this day, memorabilia of AIDS victims are woven together and thus rescued from oblivion and ignorance. The film summarizes the experiences of the first decade of dealing with AIDS, the grief over the losses, the anger over the inaction of the Reagan administration and the fighting spirit of the AIDS movement. At a time when the gay victims of the epidemic remained invisible in the media, the film offered all the tools of a major Hollywood production, with Dustin Hoffman as narrator and Bobby McFerrin as soundtrack composer, to tell the story as confidently as possible. In 1989, the filmmakers won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for this indispensable document of gay history.
