Can migration be controlled? Can people fleeing their homes be stopped or redirected? How can integration succeed in Dortmund? What can we do to help? Prof. Dr. Ludger Pries (sociologist at Ruhr University Bochum and migration expert) and Prof. Dr. Emra Ilgün-Birhimeoğlu (sociologist and professor of migration, integration, and participation at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences). And, of course, there will be an opportunity for questions from the audience.

Prof. Dr. Emra Ilgün-Birhimeoğlu teaches and conducts research at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences in the Department of Applied Social Sciences. Her work focuses on migration, racism, and social participation. In particular, she focuses on civic engagement, migrant organizations and their role in a society of migration, as well as on families, migration, and racism. Her current research includes the potential and structures of migrant organizations in Dortmund, as well as the intergenerational transmission of coping strategies for dealing with racism.

Prof. Dr. Ludger Pries is a senior professor and formerly held the Chair of Sociology/Organization, Migration, and Co-determination in the Faculty of Social Sciences at Ruhr University Bochum. He has held research and teaching positions in Brazil, Mexico, Spain, and the United States. His primary areas of work and research include (internationally comparative) organizational and labor sociology, sociology of migration, and transnationalization research. From 2011 to 2015, he was a member and vice-chair of the Expert Council of German Foundations on Migration and Integration. From 2015 to 2017, he held the Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt Chair at El Colegio de México in Mexico City.
