Zwischen Wirklichkeit und Traum. Otto Gleichmann und der Expressionismus in Hannover
In the organizer's words:
BETWEEN REALITY AND DREAM
OTTO GLEICHMANN
AND EXPRESSIONISM IN HANNOVER
August 1 through November 1, 2026
As a retrospective, the exhibition features over 100 works from Otto Gleichmann’s (1887–1963) nearly 50-year creative career. Gleichmann belongs to the younger generation of German Expressionists and was a member of the Hanover Secession. Despite his success in the first half of the 20th century, he is virtually forgotten today.
His primary subject is the human being; his work is imbued with humanitarian compassion and the finest sensitivity. Enchanted figures roam densely packed urban landscapes or enjoy themselves in variety shows and circuses. For the first time, the exhibition also presents the work of his wife, Lotte Gleichmann-Giese (1890–1975) is presented for the first time, complemented by 36 works by artists from Otto Gleichmann’s circle who were active in Hanover in the late 1910s and early 1920s.
