The founding of Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle in Munich in 1968 marked the beginning of a forum for contemporary art, which over the years has presented numerous artists with their first solo exhibitions in Germany or their first solo exhibitions ever. The list includes artists such as Dan Graham, Jeff Wall, Rodney Graham, Karin Kneffel, Candida Höfer, Thomas Struth, Thomas Ruff and Anri Sala.

One of the gallery's focal points in the 1970s was the presentation of conceptual art with artists such as Dan Graham and On Kawara. Conceptual content, the questioning of the relationship between art and reality and the contextual reflection of art are still the common link between the artists represented by Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle across generations and media. The compositions of Martin Creed or Goshka Macuga follow this tradition.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the owner, curator and essayist Rüdiger Schöttle pursued a program that was open to the partial return of the narrative and the re-evaluation of images. Since the 1980s, the Düsseldorf School of Photography has been one of the focal points of the gallery's program. Artists such as Thomas Ruff, Candida Höfer and Thomas Struth are regularly exhibited and have been complemented by the young Chinese artist Chen Wei.

In addition to cultivating a program of established artists, Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle has a decisive interest in exploring new approaches in the contemporary art scene and regularly presents works by young, up-and-coming artists such as Toulu Hassani, Thu-Van Tran and Elif Saydam.
