It's me! Self-staging in dance
Duration: May 1, 2025 to March 1, 2026

The interplay between dance, photography and film has always been characterized by the unbridled joy of experimentation and innovation. With the advent of movement photography in the 20th century and the first attempts to document dance on film, worlds of images emerged in which the inventiveness of contemporary dance was excitingly combined with modern pictorial techniques in photography and film.

n addition to the mere documentation of movement, the focus of the actors in front of and behind the camera was always on the aspect of (self-)staging. Fictitious photographic or cinematic image realities were created specifically for the camera.

Online platforms such as TIKTOK and Instagram have expanded the possibilities and functions of an image-based exploration of dance and movement to an extent previously thought impossible. It has never been easier to create, disseminate and exchange individual images of dance. New, virtual stages of dance emerged and triggered a veritable flood of images - in the process, photography, physicality and movement sometimes took on new, directly communicative functions. The way you move - the way you feel - Show it!

But what is real? Which images can still be trusted in the face of the almost inexhaustible possibilities of digital image processing? The dividing lines between documentation, staging and illusion seem to be blurring in the face of artificial intelligence.

New questions arise: how does the media's play with (self-)staging shape and change our image of dance? What forms of visualization of dance and movement will be possible in the future?

The exhibition "It's me?" is dedicated to old and new stagings of the self in the dance image and the underlying concepts - the exhibition at the Tanzmuseum makes use of the extensive holdings of the archive's photo and film collection and deliberately places them in the context of new questions and current discussions.
