Bavarian pubs in Munich: 11 tips - Rausgegangen
With hundreds of restaurants in the city, it can sometimes be tricky to make a choice. Especially if you want everything to fit from top to bottom because you have visitors from another city, want to go out for a good meal with your parents or simply want to treat yourself!
Quality, a fair price-performance ratio and a pleasant atmosphere: we can recommend these pubs at any time if you want to eat Bavarian food in Munich.
Wirtshaus Obacht
Wirtshaus Obacht has been inviting you to feast in Maxvorstadt since 2017. Here you'll find everything your heart could desire when it comes to Bavarian cuisine:
From snacks and special delicacies such as meatballs to classic main courses such as Wiener Schnitzel or three kinds of bread dumplings. We particularly recommend the oven-fresh roast pork (only available at weekends!).
What we also like here: Obacht manages to interpret traditional Bavarian food & atmosphere in a modern way without seeming artificial. You may be sitting under a (rather impressive) ancient Augustiner beer kettle, but the room is bright and friendly - and the illustrations and Bavarian wisdom by Michael "Mixen" Wiethaus on the wall liven things up even more!
Fraunhofer Wirtshaus & Theater
80469 München
A true institution: the Fraunhofer pub in - yes, of course - Fraunhoferstrasse.
Not only how long the Fraunhofer has been around (its history goes back to 1774!), but also the theater here makes the place something very special: Since the 1970s, amateurs and professionals, musicians, actors, cabaret artists and other performers have been demonstrating their creative skills on stage here.
But even if you "only" come here for food, you're in good hands. The meat is sourced from an organic butcher's shop in Tyrol, but if you prefer vegetarian food, you'll also find it here - and there are vegan options too!
Giesinger Bräustüberl
81538 München
The Giesinger Bräustüberl brings together what simply belongs together: good beer and Bavarian cuisine. From onion roast to Kasspatzn and snacks to sweet classics such as Kaiserschmarrn or strawberry Obatzda: the menu offers plenty of choice and is still clearly laid out.
We particularly like two things about the Giesinger Bräustüberl: The meat and artisan sausages come from trusted local butchers and the eggs come from organic Bavarian farms. What's more, each dish comes with a recommendation as to which beer from the Giesinger Bräu range would go particularly well with it.
Augustiner Bräustuben
Augustiner beer is (fortunately) served in many a Munich pub, which is also reflected in our tips. But the classic among all Augustiner pubs is of course the Augustiner Bräustuben itself.
This traditional Munich brewery is unmistakably located directly on Landsberger Straße, where you can also stop for a bite to eat. Of course, the star of the menu here is the beer. But the food is also impressive - even for breakfast, because you can get veal sausages here from 10 am.
Weinbauer
The Weinbauer is located in the heart of Altschwabing, between Leopoldstraße and the English Garden. Here, too, you can enjoy really fabulous Bavarian food. And it has been doing so since 1861, as the restaurant can look back on quite a long tradition.
The food here is cooked according to the motto "tastes like home from home", which is also intended to emphasize that quality is very important here. It is therefore fitting that the products are mainly sourced from local farms, butchers and regional traders.
As it should be, you can also enjoy a pale or wheat beer with your meal here - Hacker-Pschorr is served.
Wirtshaus Hohenwart
We recommend a visit to Wirtshaus Hohenwart to anyone in Obergiesing with a craving for hearty Bavarian food. Simply because the food is really really good - not necessarily cheap, but for good food it's worth paying a little more.
Some vegetarian dishes, such as the dumpling duo of spinach and cheese dumplings, also make veggies happy. And if you have eaten far too much, there is a remedy on site: At Hohenwart, you can also get some exercise, as there is a bowling alley at the back of the pub just waiting to be played on.
Zur Schwalbe
80339 München
Very, very tasty Bavarian food is also available in the Westend - at the "Schwalbe".
Augustiner is served; the small but well-balanced menu has everything you could wish for in typical Bavarian dishes. But there are also special dishes such as home-marinated salmon trout carpaccio or porcini mountain cheese dumplings with verbena, lovage and savory on a tomato and rocket salad.
Very nice for warm summer days and evenings: there is a small but very nice beer garden in the backyard, which makes the food that little bit better. And you can bowl here - in the dining room, which is big enough that the lane doesn't have to be moved to the cellar.
Görreshof
A visit to the Görreshof in Maxvorstadt is always a safe bet and has been for many years.
In the rustic, cozy pub you can not only sit inside, but also in the beer garden in summer. There's always a place to sit here. Just like a dish you fancy: In addition to the standard menu with typical Bavarian classics, there is also a daily menu with seasonal dishes and an extra menu with corresponding prices for lunchtime - so it's not too much to say that everyone will find something here.
It tastes good, the value for money is always right and the atmosphere is just as it should be in a pub. So let's go there!
Wirtshaus in der Au
The Wirtshaus in der Au is a hot tip from us anyway - not only when it comes to dumplings, but also for all other Bavarian dishes.
The restaurant is run ecologically and sustainably: For example, the certified organic food is purchased from regional and certified suppliers and manufacturers and only compostable take-away boxes are used. We think that's great!
The menu of the Wirtshaus in der Au is quite extensive and offers many classics, but also some specialties - for example South Tyrolean Schlutzkrapfen with Mediterranean vegetables and paprika-zucchini pesto. Mmhhhh!
Rumpler
The Rumpler is a well-known address in Glockenbach: the restaurant in Baumstraße has been around for more than 20 years now. It serves solid Bavarian cuisine.
And that starts with the ingredients, which is why it is mainly local produce from the farmers' market and weekly market on Mariahilfplatz that ends up in the pots and pans.
Good to know: The daily menu always includes a selection of vegetarian dishes. The meat also comes from "DIG Strohschwein" pigs raised in a species-appropriate manner.
Wirtshaus Maximilian
Wirtshaus Maximilian is another recommendation for good Bavarian cuisine in Glockenbach.
We particularly like two things here: firstly, the emphasis on quality and regionality. Wirtshaus Maximilian increasingly relies on local suppliers - the char comes fresh from Lake Tegernsee. On the other hand, the restaurant succeeds in combining old tradition with modernity. This starts with the interior (it is cozy, but not old-fashioned) and is also reflected in the menu. In addition to many meat-based main courses, you will of course also be served vegetarian classics such as Kasspatzn or oven-baked vegetables with seasonal varieties.
No matter what you feel like, we can always recommend the sensationally good Kaiserschmarrn afterwards. Enjoy!
