Mr. Scruff: The Entire Danceable World of Music
The Entire Danceable World of Music: Mr. Scruff loves playing extended DJ sets, and he’s been doing it for quite some time. He’s already spun at our Icon event and has been part of Gretchen from the very beginning. We’re thrilled that he’s celebrating Gretchen’s 15th birthday with us.
In his DJ sets, Scruff always moves through all genres—whether it’s jazz, soul, funk, disco, boogie, deep house, reggae, rocksteady, dancehall, Afro, Latin, hip-hop, breakbeats, drum ’n’ bass, or electro. Any combination of these and other styles is possible. Since Mr. Scruff isn’t just a DJ and producer, but also a graphic designer and cartoonist, we’re also looking forward to the visuals he’ll be bringing with him. And because he’s been doing this for so long, he’s decided that the night will start at 8:00 p.m. and last until 2:00 a.m. (Mr. Scruff: “I can’t handle the crazy late nights anymore!”).
As a producer, Mr. Scruff has released tracks on over 25 labels over the years. Here’s a small selection: In 1995, he caused a stir among DJs and critics with “Sea Mammal.” In 1997, the EP “Large Pies” followed on the Cup of Tea label in Bristol. In 1999, the single “Get A Move On” was released, based on a Moondog sample (“Bird’s Lament”) and featured in numerous commercials. With “Keep It Unreal,” he created a multifaceted album that spiced up downbeat with catchy melodies. With “Trouser Jazz,” he plunged into an adventure blending disco, funk, jazz, and ’70s smoothness. “Friendly Bacteria” featured disco influences, house experiments, and classic mid-tempo nu-soul bangers.
From time to time, Mr. Scruff invites guest DJs who share his enthusiasm; this time, Berlin-based DJ, producer, and globetrotter moe. is joining the lineup. Originally from Sudan and raised in Abu Dhabi, he has since lived in New Orleans, Kuala Lumpur, and Stockholm, and now calls Berlin home. His travels have taught him that no matter where you are, genres don’t matter—what counts is the dance floor. His sets take us on a journey through deep, hypnotic sounds ranging from techno to organic and experimental elements. He seamlessly blends driving grooves with distinct warmth and musical depth.
Whether as a DJ, producer, on his radio show at Refuge Worldwide, as a resident at Berlin’s listening bar Unkompress, as co-host of “Endless Groove” (a nonprofit community party in Stockholm and Berlin), as the initiator of “Black Is...” (a gender-inclusive platform supporting BIPOC voices in Berlin and Amsterdam), or through many other projects, moe. demonstrates a special ability in all his roles: to build energy and foster community through music and the right setting.
