Diene Sagna grew up in Senegal, where he also founded his own dance company, Yaye Dib Dance, in 2008. Diene Sagna is considered a master of Sabar dance and has collaborated with artists such as Baaba Maal, Youssou N’Dour, Mory Kanté, and Coumba Gawlo Seck, among others. Diene is appreciated for his teaching style, which is both friendly and motivating as well as challenging. His classes welcome everyone. For him, as a teacher and artist, tanzhaus nrw is an important place of encounter: “For me, tanzhaus nrw is like a big family where everyone believes in one thing—dance.” Diene, who now lives in Bonn, is deeply committed to promoting West African art and culture. Performances, classes, workshops, and other events have taken him to 40 countries so far.

Sabar remains a vibrant part of everyday life in Senegal to this day. Sabar is a traditional, highly energetic, and powerful dance of the Wolof people in Senegal, performed to the rhythm of Sabar drums. The live musicians respond directly to the dancers by emphasizing key movements and using percussion to signal transitions. Experienced drummers can anticipate the dancers’ movements, thereby creating a dynamic connection with them. The focus of the class is on expression and the joy of movement. The goal is to (re)discover or deepen our connection to the ground and, through the gradual development of individual choreographies, to cultivate a strong sense of our body as a whole.

▪️People of all backgrounds and experience levels are welcome 🤗. Previous dance experience can be helpful but is NOT required. Age group: 16–99

▪️Please bring plenty of water 💧, comfortable clothing, and possibly a towel. We prefer to dance barefoot 👣.
