PICK OF THE DAY Theater tanz-performance
In the organizer's words:

An event of the Black Story MonthBremen

Information about the piece

In the performance "Azúcar", Hamburg artist Antonya Silva relates the Afro-Cuban dances and practices of the Regla de Ocha or Santerìa religion to the Cuban exile experience. The title of this autobiographically inspired exploration of Afro-Cuban culture and the diaspora is the exclamation "Azúcar!". This was coined by Cuban salsa great Celia Cruz. In her songs and at Cuban parties, it stands for an expression of joy. At the same time, it points to the diasporic dimension of Afro-Cuban culture, which developed as a result of the slave trade and the cultivation of goods such as sugar.

Based on interviews with Cuban exiles, Antonya Silva, together with dancer and choreographer Yorgenis Danger Garcia, creates an immersive ritual that explores the Afro-Cuban experience in Germany between exclusion, self-empowerment and exoticization.
