Cologne, 1926: A brand-new skyscraper by architect Jakob Koerfer stood on Hansaring, which was the tallest skyscraper in Europe for a long time. In the same year, an architectural competition that is almost forgotten today posed questions that still resonate today:

How high should a city build? How modern should it be - and who owns the cityscape?

Over 400 architects and two female architects submitted designs for the Heumarkt and the bridgehead of the Deutzer Brücke.

None of the projects were realized. But the competition sparked fierce controversy and was dubbed the "Cologne high-rise carnival" in the specialist press. The site itself remains unresolved in terms of urban planning to this day.

Master's students from the TH Köln's architecture specialization in monument preservation are researching a selection of the designs submitted at the time.

A tenth of the projects submitted at the time have been redescribed and printed in 3D, conveying a never-before-seen impression of the wealth of ideas at the time.

Interactive elements invite visitors of all ages to take part: they can evaluate designs in the role of jury members or rethink urban spaces as architects and try out their own high-rise ideas.
