Arvo Pärt, who celebrated his 90th birthday last year, is the world's most frequently performed living composer. He calls the compositional technique he has developed to creative maturity since the mid-1970s the "Tintinnabuli style", derived from the Latin word for playing bells (tintinnabulum). With its archaic tonality and moving triads, it has a hypnotic, captivating effect full of meditative power. The Estonian composer uses this style in his "Passio" from 1982, which is one of the most radical and moving works of contemporary sacred music and offers a profound reflection on the meaning of Christ's sacrifice in his setting of the Latin text of the Gospel of John. Ensemble la Sportelle and The Gesualdo Six have been established as unique voices in the world of sacred music for many years. Under the direction of Owain Park, the calmly flowing, finely balanced interweaving of consistently excellent voices will allow Arvo Pärt's music of internalization, concentration and spirituality to blossom anew.
