Ausstellung: »Hinter dem Mittelmeer«— mit Fotografien, Reportagen und Hintergrundinformationen entlang zentraler Migrationsrouten

More than ten years after the peak of the refugee influx in 2015, when more than one million Syrians and other civil war refugees arrived in Germany, public sentiment in Europe has shifted. Agreements with countries in the western and southern Mediterranean are intended to prevent migrants and refugees from reaching Italy, Greece, or Spain. Although the number of arrivals has declined significantly, the root causes of migration persist. War, climate change, nepotism, unemployment, and the creeping collapse of state structures across entire regions continue to drive many young people to leave their homelands. Families are forced to sell all their possessions to give their loved ones a chance at a better life.

The exhibition “Beyond the Mediterranean” sheds light on current migration routes, the economic situation in countries of origin, and the EU’s strategies in the southern and western Mediterranean. Through striking photographs, videos, statistics, and expert discussions, it offers insights into the realities of life for migrants and refugees: from the tent cities in Tunisia to daily life in Damascus and Tripoli, and on to the smuggling routes through the Sahara. The reports and images on display portray people from Syria, Lebanon, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan, and West Africa who have set out, were forced to flee, or have returned voluntarily. In doing so, the exhibition addresses questions that often go unanswered in daily news coverage and makes it clear that migration—even if it no longer dominates the headlines every day—will remain one of the major global challenges of the coming years.

The exhibition was conceived byMirco Keilberth. He is an independent journalist, filmmaker, and media trainer specializing in North Africa and Southeast Europe. A native of Hamburg, he studied media and cultural studies and began his journalistic career covering the war in the former Yugoslavia. He then worked for several years in Belgrade and Sarajevo before producing documentaries and reports on conflicts in Africa. He has traveled to more than 20 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Migration is a central theme of his work. He regularly gives lectures on this topic and organizes photo exhibitions featuring images from migration routes in Africa and Europe.
