A newly restored, unique contemporary document from the early Thatcher era: BABYLON tells the story of David (played by Brinsley Forde, guitarist in the reggae band Asward), who works as a car mechanic in south-west London and organizes parties at night as part of a dub sound system. Because of his skin color, he is subjected to constant discrimination and police violence. A film full of anger and passion, the missing link between THE HARDER THEY COME and Steve McQueen's LOVERS ROCK. With a soundtrack by legendary producer Dennis Bovell.

Franco Rosso's BABYLON tells the story of the lives of Jamaican youths in London at the beginning of the Thatcher era. Blue, a DJ and immigrant, is repeatedly confronted with racial hatred and prejudice. He loses his girlfriend, his job, is unjustly arrested and has to assert himself in the daily struggle for survival. In BABYLON, the Jamaican way of life meets the British middle class - contrasts that could hardly be greater. Rosso succeeds in creating an intense and culturally and historically valuable portrayal of immigrant life in England in the 1980s and underscores this with contemporary reggae music, which acts as a mouthpiece for the cultural minority. A movie worth seeing about an important piece of youth culture.
