Richard, once a builder of dams and aqueducts, lives a reclusive and solitary life following the death of his wife. He has cut off contact with his daughter Helen, a lawyer married to a Black writer, because he rejects her political views. Now he is nearly blind and no longer able to live on his own—so he has no choice but to ask her for help. Two incompatible ways of life, which had long made living together impossible, now collide. Neither had been willing, until now, to bridge the gap between them. Both are blind: to each other’s perspective as well as to the wounds they have inflicted on one another. Only through a cautious rapprochement do they gradually come to recognize the other’s motivations, fears, and desires—and, for the first time, develop an understanding for one another.
