BLURT

Punk Jazz

Saxophonist Ted Milton (born in 1943) coined the term punk jazz in the 1980s, and his band Blurt is still one of the most exciting and rousing acts on the avant-garde scene today.

Anyone who wants to see and, above all, hear the old master of "punk fake pogo jazz" with his band one last time should seize the opportunity.

In his autobiography, Eric Clapton describes how he often spent time with Milton in the summer of 1965 in Milton's girlfriend Clarissa's apartment. "Ted was an extraordinary man. A poet and visionary ... he was the first person I had ever seen interpret music so physically ... expressing it with his whole being, dancing and miming what he was hearing. Watching him, I understood for the first time how you can really experience music, how you can listen to it and bring it to life so that it becomes part of your life. It was a true awakening experience."

Milton's lyrics are at least as Dadaist as his saxophone playing. Sometimes breathed, sometimes shouted, he hits the listener with a thick, unsettling pound. Drums and guitar form the ground on which Ted Milton can unfold. In 1980, Ted Milton threw down his gloves and his job as a puppeteer, learned the saxophone and formed the band Blurt. The band members surrounded themselves with such illustrious guests as the Sex Pistols, Eric Clapton, The Police and many other suspects from the famous years of punk and rock. Milton's Dada avant-garde jazz and the torn, hypnotic no-wave anthems were style-defining for various artists and bands in the early 80s.

With Blurt, a certain minimalism is added to this, consisting of trashy, hypnotic drums, monotonous guitar licks and tribal, meandering sermons. Only rarely has music been so direct and immediate, yet so controlled and energetic, as with the band led by former puppeteer Ted Milton. Simply no compromises, just blurt. New 12-inch vinyl record "The Mecanno Giraffe" on All City Records. "Classic blurt with saxophone interludes and witty lyrics... a puppeteer's penchant for drama and intimate self-reflection."

- The Wire

"A combination of driving beats, Milton's spoken poetic lyrics, sublime free saxophone playing and deliberately unconventional guitar ... Blurt defy genre categorization ... they fuse rock and free jazz ... the only guarantee ... Blurt will make you smile." - Free Jazz Collective "The Mecanno giraffe frames the beat-punk absurdities in a contradictory best way ... charming proof that he's still got it, more than 45 years after Blurt's inception."

CADAVRE DE SCHNAPS

"free-spirited" trippy "snotty avant-folk-alternative"

Cadavre de Schnaps started in 2015 as a one-man DIY project by Jeong-Il Sin. Songwriting and production were realized with the simplest of means and without commercial ambitions. Despite this, the resulting album Let Bad Things Happen was well received in the Cologne indie scene and was mentioned in the Stadtrevue as one of the best albums of the year.

It said: "Here, DIY is presented in top form in the crackling field of tension between raw dilettantism and obvious musical adeptness." 24OurMusic wrote: "For fans of DIY indie music that may not be perfect but is definitely made with blood sweat and tears." With a much more ambitious production approach, the second album Comedy was completed in 2019, which was recorded with numerous guest musicians, some of whom went on to form a permanent band.

formed a permanent band. This was followed by a self-organized tour in NRW and concerts with Cologne's

scene greats such as Die Sonne, Angelika Express, Alpentines and Acua.

Schnüss wrote about comedy : "The "record drunkenly and fearlessly does not take the straight and narrow, but

always the most interesting way to the finish" and Trvelove said: "DIY doesn't come across as high-quality and playful

DIY doesn't come along that often after all."

At the beginning of 2022, with financial support from the City of Cologne's Department of Culture , the

Barhill Records , the first release Unlearning By Doing was produced entirely with the band in

physical and digital form. The 5-track EP emphasized the more accessible aspects of the band and was

band and was very well received by critics.

"The guys from Cologne sound like it feels to put on a T-shirt inside out." Visions

"Highly recommended, unagitated and very DIY." Trust Fanzine

"So if you're tired of well-trodden paths, you should join Cadavre de Schnaps on this short trip

and explore other realms." Slam Zine

"In between noise, noise, reconciliation of sounds and all very exciting." OxFanzine

Another EP, One Of The Laziest Takes , was released in the summer of 2024, which was

developed with the whole band even more than before. For the first time, the songs were recorded live

recorded live at Bearcave Studio , perfectly capturing the raw energy and dynamics of the band.

The EP represents the band's ongoing development and experimentation,

that continues to redefine itself musically and stylistically.

"Here is a band on the road to change that has found a very idiosyncratic,

sound that defies categorization into a genre time and time again.

genre." OxFanzine

"How lazy the band CADAVRE DE SCHNAPS were when recording "One Of The Laziest

Takes", I can't say, but I can say that the band impressively demonstrates on the four songs

impressively demonstrates how indie rock can be made exciting, so that listening to it is never boring.

"The almost 15-minute EP always has one foot in the dreamy realm, especially thanks to the elegiac vocals.
