In her extraordinary debut "Zungenbrecher", Karina Papp tells the story of Kiera, a young woman who moves from St. Petersburg to Berlin to build a new life for herself. She begins to study, falls in love, discovers her queerness, avoids her parents' expectations and throws herself into translating texts. While wars and crises shake the world, Kiera searches for her own voice.
The book uniquely weaves together three languages - Russian, English and German - to create a poetic narrative about identity, resistance and the search for beauty in a fracturing world. It is a work about love, desire and belonging that touches gently and painfully at the same time.
On the evening, Karina Papp will read from her debut and talk to Lin Hierse about the challenges of her protagonist and the author's clever thoughts on language and being. Tickets are available here.
