100 years of stage design professorship at the Düsseldorf Art Academy
The spirit of optimism of the Weimar Republic was not only evident in the fashion and architecture of the time. It also left its mark on the theater, quite the contrary. The stage took up the visual zeitgeist. Where backdrops had been painted around 1900, stage spaces were now built that often used bright colors and geometric shapes. The costumes also took up the cuts and aesthetics of 1920s fashion. In 1925, one of the first stage art classes in Germany was established at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and Walter von Wecus was the first theater designer to be appointed professor of stage art in 1926. Stage Art in the 1920s celebrates these new departures with models, costumes, designs, masks and photographs.
