As part of Düsseldorf China Week 2026, the Düsseldorf Chinese Film Festival will take place on September 13 and 14, 2026, at the Düsseldorf Film Museum.

The film screenings on September 13 and 14 are open to the public and free of charge.

About the Chinese Film Festival

The film festival is jointly organized by the Shanghai Film Distribution and Exhibition Association and the Association for Educational and Technical Exchange between Germany and China (BTDC). Cooperation partners include the Düsseldorf Film Museum, Langjiu Group (郎酒集团), the Alliance of German China Societies (ADCG), and the Düsseldorf Society for German-Chinese Friendship. The event is also supported by the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Düsseldorf.

The event builds on the long-standing cooperation and ongoing exchange with the Shanghai Film Distribution and Exhibition Association and the Shanghai Film Center. The goal is to further deepen cinematic and cultural exchange between China and Germany and to provide Düsseldorf audiences with direct access to Chinese filmmaking as well as to various facets of Chinese society and culture.

Over the two days of the event, a total of three selected Chinese films from different eras and genres will be presented. The program ranges from a recent biographical production to a modern animated film and a classic of Chinese film history, thereby offering diverse perspectives on historical and contemporary China.

With this selection, the organizers aim to showcase both current trends in Chinese cinema and a significant classic of Chinese film history. At the same time, the program is geared toward a diverse audience—from families and young people to those interested in China, as well as audiences with an interest in cultural and film history.

《水饺皇后》 – The Dumpling Queen

Following the opening ceremony of the Chinese Film Festival,*The Dumpling Queen*will be screened as the opening film.

The film tells the story of Zang Jianhe, a single mother who arrives in Hong Kong under difficult circumstances and builds a new life for herself through courage, perseverance, and entrepreneurial spirit. What begins as a business selling homemade dumplings eventually grows into one of Hong Kong’s most renowned food companies.

The film centers on a strong female character. Her personal life story weaves together themes such as family, social change, self-reliance, and economic advancement, while also offering a vivid insight into the development of Chinese society.

《雄狮少年2》 – I Am What I Am 2

A Juan comes to Shanghai to work. To earn money for his father’s medical treatment, he enters the “Shanghai Fight Night” competition on behalf of a traditional martial arts studio that has fallen on hard times.

This animated film blends modern city life in Shanghai with Chinese martial arts, humor, and a story about family, perseverance, and personal growth. With its dynamic visual style, the film appeals particularly to younger audiences while also conveying a modern and urban portrait of contemporary China. As an animated film, it is particularly suitable for children, teenagers, and families.

《阿诗玛》 – Ashima

The Chinese Film Festival concludes with*Ashima*, a classic of Chinese film history.

The film tells the story of the young Ashima, a member of the Sani ethnic group. After she is kidnapped by the son of a wealthy family, her lover Ahei sets out to rescue her.

Ashima is based on a well-known folk tale and combines a poetic love story with music, dance, traditional costumes, and the cultural world of the Sani. The screening thus offers not only a glimpse into the history of Chinese cinema but also into China’s cultural diversity.
