»Schicksal/Los« – Filmvorführung mit anschließendem Gespräch in Anwesenheit der Regisseurin Joanna Mielewczyk

In the organizer's words:

Documentary, directed by Joanna Mielewczyk, Germany/Poland 2023, 50 min.

The German-Polish documentary “Schicksal/Los” tells the story of two men—a German and a Pole—who survived the siege of the Breslau Fortress as teenagers. Decades later, in 2022, they meet in person for the first time.

The memories of Jürgen Hempel and Jerzy Podlak offer powerful insights into daily life in the besieged city. From a child’s perspective, they describe their wartime experiences and bring to life the emotional scars that still linger today. Accompanied by archival footage and private photographs, Joanna Mielewczyk’s film takes the form of an intimate documentary that focuses on individual fates and embeds them within “big history.” Thus, the film is not only a narrative about the past, but also a reflection on memory, identity, and the possibility of cross-border dialogue.
