Let's talk about beauty!
We all want to feel beautiful or have fun with beauty. Not so easy in a world in which the excesses of racist, sexist and queer-hostile views of people and their bodies can fill an entire vocabulary list: White gaze, male gaze, exoticization or colorism are no longer new terms in the discourse critical of racism and sexism. And yet: trends such as "clean beauty", the displacement of body positivity on social media and the revival of beauty ideals that were thought to have been forgotten are not only causing young women* more and more distress. What and who is considered "standard beauty" in our society? What effects do Western beauty standards have on all of our bodies and how do we deconstruct them? Ultimately, is there anything left to save of the idea of beauty? In the last edition of this season of "Das Haymatministerium", we talk to education officer Emilène Wopana Mudimu and photographer and community arts curator Sarah Ungan about beauty and its flaws. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Sevda Can Arslan. Afterwards, we will bid farewell to "Das Haymatministerium" in the cosy studio courtyard with tea, music and cold drinks before the summer break. Emilène Wopana Mudimu is an education officer, author and presenter from Aachen. She runs the KingzCorner youth and media center in Aachen, which specializes in hip-hop-related art and media education for school classes and visitors to open cultural youth work. Emilene Wopana Mudimu has been working in racism-critical and discrimination-sensitive work since 2012. Mudimu is one of 20 co-authors of the anthology "Schwarz wird großgeschrieben", published by &Töchter Verlag in September 2021, and one of four curators of the anthology "Neue Töchter Afrikas", published by Unrast Verlag in April 2023. Sarah Ungan is a photographer and history and cultural studies scholar. She has been head of the Community & Arts section at Kulturhaus Karlstorbahnhof Heidelberg since 2022. In her work, she conceives, curates and organizes projects at the intersections of participatory art, post-migrant discourse, self-efficacy and empowerment, as well as questions of identity and representation. Her works on the topic of cultural shame can currently be seen in the group exhibition "GAZE AND SKIN" at LANGER Mannheim. Moderator: Dr. Sevda Can Arslan is a media and communication scientist and moderator. She teaches and researches from a power-critical perspective on topics such as police violence and the media at the University of Paderborn and is active in the May 2nd Initiative. Since the 2025.26 season, she has been a permanent moderator of the discussion and reading series "Das Haymatministerium" at the Nationaltheater Mannheim.
