Rainer Bielfeldt and Carsten Golbeck recognized this—and more: a text that, in its very structure and language, cries out for a musical adaptation. They didn’t hesitate and, with this chanson musical now before us, wrote the first explicitly musical version of this great classic.
Doris is eighteen; she doesn’t care about education but “would rather become a star at the Tauenzien than work.” She’s long since run out of money and a place to stay, so she sits outside an entertainment venue, hoping to be invited in. Or perhaps even to be hired: “After all, I’m already drama school.” While she waits for her audition, she has plenty of time to tell us her story: her spectacular escape from a small town to Berlin, the numerous romantic entanglements and scams through which she ensures her survival. Above all, however, it’s her sense of humor and her unique perspective on things that ensure she always manages to get back on her feet.
