Der andere Weg – Linolschnitte aus Israel

In the organizer's words:

The linocuts in the "The Other Way" picture collection with art sheets from Israel were created by young people - Jews, Palestinians and immigrants from all over the world - as a lasting legacy. They were created in the 1960s and 1970s under the guidance of educator Puah Menczel at Israel's first comprehensive school, where Jewish and Palestinian children were taught together. The black and white linocuts tell of the deep longing for peace, tolerance and mutual respect between cultures and religions.

Only with people who are prepared to break through old patterns of thought and action of hatred, violence and killing is a different path possible, a path to a more peaceful future, which we long for today more than ever. The originality and beauty of these linocuts challenge us to rethink our coexistence and our integration into creation, wherever we live.

At the exhibition opening on Saturday, June 8 from 6:30 p.m., we will talk to Muchtar Al Ghusain, Head of Cultural Affairs of the City of Essen, about the pictures and their idea of reconciliation. Muchtar Al Ghusain will also be playing songs from his program "wunde heimat" with poems set to music by Mascha Kaléko, Heinrich Heine and Mahmud Darwish. The poems set to music are about Germany, about flight and war, about the feeling of homelessness - heavy themes that come across very lightly musically in a style of jazz, chanson and pop and thus also want to comfort and strengthen us in a time that shows us old wounds and inflicts new ones every day.
