In the organizer's words:
Documentary Music Theater
“At every border you find yourself at,
you split yourself in two.
What remains of my humanity?
What remains of my good qualities? My bad qualities? My friends?”
Borders are man-made. And when, in times of crumbling political firewalls, the protection of human rights is no longer a given, lines drawn by human hands determine one’s very existence. In their large-scale world premiere, composer Julia Mihály and writer Sina Ahlers explore the emotions and sounds of the political complex of migration. The actual and metaphorical fires serve as the central theme of this documentary music theater: from the fire in Moria on Lesbos to crumbling firewalls.
In Julia Mihály’s evocative soundscape—composed of documentary recordings and live music performed by a large orchestra under the musical direction of Clemens Fieguth—contradictory chasms repeatedly open up: between Europe’s Enlightenment ideals and realpolitik, between smoldering fires and the water police. Author Sina Ahlers, who has already enjoyed great success at the Kassel Schauspiel with*Milch & Schuld*and*Schamparadies*, transforms her research—including numerous interviews with experts—into a poetic form tailored to the composition and language of the piece.
