In the organizer's words:
Musical Theater
From the dawn of modern civilization to the conquest of the stars, rationalization has left a trail of devastation throughout human history.
At the critical junctures of the dialectic between freedom and catastrophe, director and playwright Alexander Eisenach and his team take hold and embark on a tour de force through the consequences of modernity, until it collapses back into feudal conditions and the technological prophets of tomorrow become the kings of yesterday. Setting out from the stuffy front yards of the old Federal Republic, this boundary-pushing evening of musical theater ventures into the unknown realm of the past and the future. With music and opera repertoire spanning from the early modern period to the present, it encounters renouncing monks, disillusioned Enlightenment thinkers, the end of society in the neoliberal era, and the mustiness beneath the robes—until, in a distant future, humanity sets out for Mars and occupies it.
Just in time for documenta 16, the production draws on the full range of contemporary aesthetics: featuring a large choir and orchestra, an opera ensemble, actors, old and newly composed music, and even visual art in a completely new spatial arrangement at INTERIM. Musically, conductor Kiril Stankow holds the various sound and temporal layers together.
