Until the beginning of the 20th century, Jewish and Roma families of musicians in Bessarabia lived together, intermarried and played music together. These Jewish klezmer and Roma lute musicians formed a common musical culture that was destroyed by the Second World War. 70 years later, 14 internationally renowned musicians from all over the world embark on a journey into this past. The musical search for the broken sound leads them to enchanting music, but also, quite unexpectedly, to a sometimes very painful exploration of their own identity and position as Jews and Roma in and outside Europe.
