Director Joseph Green returned from America to his native Poland for the production of YIDDLE WITH HIS FIDDLE and produced the most commercially successful musical in the history of Yiddish cinema, not least thanks to the excellent acting of Molly Picon, the brilliant comedian of Yiddish theater, vaudeville and film, in the leading role. In YIDDLE WITH HIS FIDDLE, the poor young girl Itke (Molly Picon) earns her living by playing the violin at markets and in courtyards in the small town of Kazimierz-Dolny, where she lives with her elderly widowed father Arye. When they are evicted from their home, Arye sees no other way out than to start a "career" as a traveling klezmer ensemble, but has concerns for his daughter's safety because of the intrusive men. To solve the problem, Itke disguises herself as a boy, assumes the identity of "Yidl", supposedly Arye's son, and sets off with her father on a journey where unexpected encounters bring unexpected feelings. This will be followed by a lecture by Dr. Inna Klause on the musical life and fates of Jewish musicians in the Gulag.
