Die Kunst des Seilverdrehens - Workshop by Mazda
In the organizer's words:
A workshop as part of the Yayoi Kusama exhibition at Museum Ludwig.
Based on Mazda's design philosophy "Crafted with Japanese Soul", this workshop invites you to experience straw craftsmanship as a mindful and conscious process in which every movement creates form with care and precision. Inspired by the Japanese design principle of Ma - the beauty of empty space created through balance, tension and restraint - participants will create objects that are harmonious and quietly expressive.
Participants will learn a traditional Japanese technique of rope twisting (Nawa), working with natural esparto grass to create fine, handcrafted objects.
Under the guidance of Lena Heinrich, multidisciplinary artist and designer, the workshop combines traditional technique with contemporary experimentation. The focus is on the material, proportions and attention to detail - transforming a simple natural fiber into a textured and expressive object.
Each participant makes their own piece and then takes it home with them.
No previous knowledge is required to participate. The workshop is aimed at adult participants and is designed to be more demanding in terms of craftsmanship and design. We recommend robust, suitable clothing for working with natural grass fibers. There is a one-hour lunch break.
