A big sponge cake is to be baked for a birthday party, but the kitchen cupboard is no ordinary kitchen cupboard. It's whistling and rumbling inside!

King Kohledampf in the right-hand side of the cupboard wants the daughter who loves him the most to succeed him. The youngest princess, Rosalie, replies that she loves him like salt. The king is annoyed by this, as in his eyes gold and silver are worth much more than ordinary salt. He banishes Rosalie from the kingdom service.

In the other half of the cabinet, the King of Salt is annoyed that the people of Service despise true treasures such as water and salt. When his son Fabién wants to live and hide with Rosalie, he casts a spell to turn him into a pillar of salt.

Will Rosalie manage to redeem Fabién? Will she then forgive her father and return to him?
