Hoffmann's birthday, we delve into the Romantic composer's shadowy world with "Doppelgänger": Movements from his piano sonatas and the "Gran Trio" for violin, cello and piano intertwine with Hoffmann's texts - from "Little Zaches" to the "Sandman" - to create a collage that lets dream and nightmare breathe. Robert Schumann's "Adagio and Allegro" and excerpts from his "Kreisleriana" cycle for piano show how Schumann's music is nourished by Hoffmann's inventions, culminating in his powerful Piano Quartet in E flat major op. 47 as a brilliant finale. - Happy 250th birthday, Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann!
