Doppelkonzert: Bundesjazzorchster feat. Theresia Philipp / Lucy Woodward & New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra

In the organizer's words:

In 1987, the Bundesjazzorchester (Bujazzo) was founded by bandleader and composer Peter Herbolzheimer as the national youth jazz orchestra of the Federal Republic of Germany at the suggestion of the German Music Council; the first concert took place in January 1988. Over the past almost four decades, more than 900 musicians, some of them renowned today, have passed through this jazz talent factory as a career turbo. Since this year, it has been led by the artistic dual leadership of Theresia Philipp (saxophone) and Jörn-Marcus Wulff (trombone). "Mountains and Melodies" is the name of the program that Bujazzo is bringing along for its concert at Cologne Jazzweek. It is based on the rich history and diverse culture of Armenia. The composer and pianist Yessaï Karapetian was born in this country in the Middle East in 1993. Together with Philipp and the Bujazzo, he wants to build a bridge between the musical traditions of his homeland and Germany and Europe with "Mountains and Melodies" in order to show openness, mutual inspiration and the joy of dialog.

Her father Kerry Woodward is British and a well-known conductor of choral music, her mother Julie Woodward is American and editor of the renowned "The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians". Lucy Woodward was born in London in 1977 and moved to New York City with her mother after her divorce, where she began studying jazz at the Manhattan School of Music. Despite all her success (some of her songs reached the top 40), she remained true to emotional vocal jazz. Even recently, when she realized the big band album "Lucy Woodward & The Rocketeers" with composer Louk Boudesteijn from the New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra (NRJO) and her long-time guitarist Jelle Roozenburg, featuring cover songs by composers such as Nina Simone and Billy Strayhorn. Building on this, Woodward and the NRJO want to bring a program to Cologne Jazzweek that focuses on originals and skilfully mixes the emotional timbre of her voice with the powerful horns of the big band.
