It's hardly surprising that Dorian Electra was already considered a pop sensation by the Guardian in 2020. One reason for this was the debut album "Flamboyant" released in 2019, which today counts almost 38 million streams. At the heart of this debut is the celebration of male stereotypes, seen in a new light, in order to make these topics accessible and understandable to all, according to their own statement, with fun. This approach of making complex gender stereotypes and other queer issues easy to understand resonated with many people already in 2019. In 2023, over 500,000 followers on social media and over 360,000 monthly listeners on Spotify are a testament to the success of Genderfluid Man: Dorian Electra feels she belongs to no gender and embodies this freedom in music as well as in elaborately designed stage costumes. In addition to headline shows in the U.S. and Europe, fans have already celebrated Dorian Electra's hyper-pop sound at festivals such as Pukkelpop, Dour Festival, Lowlands Festival, Primavera Sound and Firefly Music Festival, as well as on a tour supporting Charli XCX in 2019. In 2020, Arte Tracks profiled the Los Angeles-based individual behind the stage name Dorian Electra, calling him a Role Model of the new decade. Dorian started playing music at the age of 14. A keyboard and the music program GarageBand were the basis for his musical career, which, in addition to male Role Models, was significantly influenced by two parental influences: First, his father's preference for classic rock and Alice Cooper, which are clearly audible as influences in Electra's music. On the other hand, the mother's earlier fascination with Baroque and the Victorian era, which is reflected in the costumes and the staging of the music videos. As early as 2010, Electra began releasing its first music videos, which quickly caused a stir with a focus on political themes. In the most recent music videos, Dorian Electra shows himself sometimes hyper-feminine ("Freak Mode"), sometimes hyper-masculine ("Career Boy") and thus explodes any conventions of presumed gender binarity. For the person behind the music, however, gender is not about clear identification, but rather a "mood, flavor or vibe that I choose every day." Fans celebrate Dorian for this versatility, which is also reflected in the artist's music. The music sounds as versatile as Dorian Electra himself. As with gender, Dorian also breaks with any genre convention. The single "Puppet," released in August 2023, builds on the opening melody of Beethoven's "Für Elise" and expands this short piano fragment to include electropop, alternative rock, breakcore and rap. A crossover experiment that succeeds on the full length and underlines the freedom in the music. So does the single "Freak Mode", which combines danceable electropop with hard rock guitars and pompous trombones. On October 6, 2023, the new album "Fanfare" will be released, which will further underpin Dorian Electra's position as a pop sensation with great versatility and genre breaks. As early as January 2024, Dorian will bring this album to the stage in Berlin and Cologne as part of selected shows. -
